We oppose corruption but reject media trials

Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed the party’s unwavering opposition to corruption, stressing that it does not condone or defend any form of misconduct by public officials.
Ahiagbah stated that the NPP’s position on corruption remains clear and uncompromising.
“The New Patriotic Party, unequivocally, is against corruption and any act of corruption as a party. We are against it. We will not defend people who, for purposes of serving the state, have misconducted themselves or abused office for personal gain,” he said on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGh,
He dismissed claims that the party shields public officials accused of wrongdoing, explaining that their criticism of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was not an attempt to interfere but a call for due process.
“Let it be stated very unambiguously that that is not what we are saying when we say that the Attorney General or the OSP should, instead of coming to the media, seek attention in court rather than seeking notice at a podium,” Ahiagbah clarified.
Ahiagbah argued that ongoing corruption investigations must be guided by evidence, not media narratives.
“We must make sure that the law is applied equally and that people are not held in the court of public opinion as being guilty when they have not committed any crime,” he emphasized.
He noted that the practice of publicly discussing cases before their conclusion creates unfair perceptions.
“There is a problem in the country now where these individuals are deemed already to have committed those crimes,” he said, urging the OSP to refrain from “media trials” and allow the courts to determine guilt or innocence.
