We treat football in Ghana like its life or death event – Ibrahim Tanko on hooliganism

Medeama’s head coach, Ibrahim Tanko, has stressed the need for a mindset shift in Ghanaian football, stating that the game should not be treated as a life-or-death event where home teams feel compelled to win at all costs.

He highlighted the challenges faced by away teams, who often encounter hostile environments due to the belief among home fans that victory is non-negotiable.

“We treat football like it’s life or death, and I don’t understand why. It’s a sport—you can win, lose, or draw. At some venues, the mentality is that the home team must win at all costs. Clubs need to educate their supporters more, and security personnel must be more proactive in ensuring safety at match venues,” Tanko stated.

The ongoing suspension of Ghana football remains a major concern for key stakeholders. However, many insist that the right measures must be in place before the league resumes.

In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced enhanced matchday safety and security protocols to be enforced at all league venues for the remainder of the season.

The tragic death of Kotoko supporter Francis Nana Yaw Frimpong (Nana Pooley) at Nana Koronmansah Park in Nsoatre has prompted extensive consultations between football authorities and the Ghana Police Service to tackle hooliganism effectively.
