We were two damaged people in a union

Controversial Nigerian broadcaster and media personality Daddy Freeze has opened up about his first marriage, describing it as a union between two people who were “too young and too damaged” to have tied the knot.
Speaking on With Chude, hosted by Chude Jideonwo, Freeze revealed that he got married at just 24 years old while his ex-wife was around 21 or 22, a decision he now admits was premature.
“I married at 24. She was 22, 21-ish,” he said. “So we were very young. We were very immature. We had no business getting married.”
According to him, the marriage was influenced by pregnancy rather than readiness for a lifelong commitment.
“You said you got married because she already had a baby,” Chude interjected.
“She was pregnant,” Freeze confirmed. “We were dating. If she wasn’t pregnant, I’m not sure I would have gotten married. So it was one of the factors that influenced the marriage.”
Freeze didn’t shy away from taking responsibility for his share of the problems that plagued the relationship, describing himself as far from “a good person” at the time.
“It was two damaged people in a union,” he admitted. “She also had trust issues. It’s not like I was a good person. It’s not like I was trustworthy. But out of ten crimes, I only committed four.”
Reflecting on their toxic dynamic, he noted that both parties were stubborn and unwilling to compromise, a pattern he humorously referred to as the “Monte Carlo effect.”
“She wasn’t quick to forget, quick to forgive, or quick to look away,” he recalled. “She focused more on the bad sides of me. We were very immature about how we ended the marriage.”
Their disagreements eventually spiraled into a standoff over their children’s welfare.
“She said, if I’m not going to pay school fees, I’m not going to see the kids. And I said, if I’m not going to see the kids, I’m not going to pay school fees,” he said.
“So it was another Monte Carlo situation over and over again. At each point, I’m sure she believed that I would back down, or I believed she would back down.”
Freeze added that he quickly entered another relationship after the marriage ended, a move that perhaps prevented him from fully healing from the first.
