We will not go back

The Ministry of Health has rolled out a new digital platform called the Ghana Health Information Management System (GHIMS) to strengthen the country’s healthcare data network and ensure that the state has full authority over citizens’ medical records.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh assured citizens that Ghana is not reversing its digital progress.

“Ghanaians will never go back to the manual way. We are moving forward responsibly, confidently, and decisively,” he said during the Accountability Series.

He explained that the Ministry’s focus was to provide a sustainable solution after discovering that the government did not own the previous platform.

“As a Ministry, our concern was to find a solution to this mess.

“Even though we didn’t have any contract with the vendor at the time, we indicated that we were ready to sign a maintenance agreement to cover the 450 facilities.

“But the software itself was not owned by the state,” he emphasized.

Akandoh highlighted that GHIMS restores full state control over digital health infrastructure.

“That is why it was called the Lightwave Health Information Management System. We are now taking full control,” he said.
