We’ll support it – Minister pledges full backing for Okomfo Anokye festival

The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has thrown her full weight behind the newly launched Okomfo Anokye Festival, describing it as a powerful celebration of Ghana’s heritage with the potential to boost social cohesion, tourism, and the local economy.

Speaking at the festival’s official launch in Awukugua, the legendary hometown of Okomfo Anokye, the Minister emphasized the critical role of culture in national development.

“I want to assure you, in my role as Regional Minister, that the Regional Coordinating Council is committed to supporting projects that uphold our rich cultural legacy and core values,” she stated.

“Traditions are only one aspect of culture; culture also plays a significant role in social cohesion, tourism, and economic growth. This kind of festival has the potential to attract tourists, bolster local economies, and promote a deeper understanding of our unique Ghanaian identity.”

The atmosphere in Awukugua, located in the Akuapem North Municipality, was nothing short of regal.

Chiefs, queen mothers, cultural troupes, and residents from all walks of life turned out in vibrant kente and traditional attire to launch the maiden edition of the Okomfo Anokye Festival. The event, organized by Awukuguaman in collaboration with the Asanteman Council, aims to honour the life and legacy of one of Africa’s most revered spiritual leaders.

Okomfo Kwame Anokye Frimpong Kotobre, better known as Okomfo Anokye, was a 17th-century priest, lawgiver, and co-founder of the powerful Asante Kingdom.

He is believed to have been born in Awukugua and is best known for his deep spiritual gifts, including calling down the Golden Stool, the symbolic soul of the Asante people, from the heavens.

Working alongside King Osei Tutu I, Anokye helped establish structures and symbols that unified the Asante and laid the foundations for their empire. His influence extended beyond religion — shaping politics, law, and social order.
