We’re installing 23,500 solar street lights

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has outlined new initiatives and addressed pressing concerns within the energy sector, including the installation of solar-powered street lights, the Tema Oil Refinery’s debt, and recent container arrivals at the port.
“We are planning to move street lights away from the grid. We have commenced the installation of 23,500 units of all-in-one solar street lights,” he stated, noting that the solar switch will significantly reduce the burden on Ghana’s electricity grid while promoting clean energy.
Responding to reports about materials locked at the ports, the Minister clarified that newly arrived containers were part of prior procurement and not part of any backlog.
“The goods in these containers were not part of the materials locked up at the port; these are new containers coming up following procurements which were undertaken previously,” he explained during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
On the state of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Mr. Jinapor pointed fingers at the previous administration led by Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing it of mismanagement and heavy indebtedness.
“Almost 200 million dollars in debt was incurred by the previous government at the Tema Oil Refinery,” he declared.
