We’re working to raise funds and get contractors back – Agbodza assures

Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has attributed the current standstill of road infrastructure across the country to overwhelming debt and what he described as irresponsible contract awards by the previous administration.

According to him, nearly all ongoing road projects, including the much-discussed Ofankor-Nsawam stretch, have come to a halt due to lack of funding.

“There are many stalled projects due to debt. We are picking up some of them, including the Ofankor, as part of the big push to prioritise their completion,” Mr. Agbodza said in a direct response to mounting pressure from the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG).

The Minister did not hold back in his criticism of the former government, accusing them of awarding multiple road contracts without making provisions for adequate funding.

“Almost all road projects are currently stalled due to debt and unsustainable levels of awarding road projects without regard for the availability of funds,” he stated.

“We are working with the Finance Minister to raise some funds to retire some of the debt and get the contractor back on site.”

His comments follow a public outcry by the C-DAG over the worsening state of the Amasaman-Nsawam highway. The group has called on the Ministry to urgently resume and accelerate work on the road, describing its current condition as a “serious hazard” to both commercial and private road users.

The Ofankor-Nsawam road project, a major artery that connects parts of Greater Accra to the Eastern Region, has seen long delays and growing frustration among commuters. Drivers complain of daily traffic congestion, poor road safety, and damage to vehicles due to the stalled construction.

While the Ministry says it is taking steps to secure funding and bring contractors back on-site, the Minister did not specify when work would resume. However, he assured the public that prioritizing stalled projects was high on the government’s agenda.
