Govt is sacking competent workers without cause – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed grave concern over what he described as politically motivated dismissals across state institutions and worsening economic conditions under the current administration.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, when the House reconvened, Afenyo-Markin said the recent wave of sackings ordered by the Chief of Staff represents a “direct assault on the integrity of public service.”

“Competent officers who were employed have been sacked from office under directives from the Chief of Staff,” he said.

“These dismissals were carried out without due process, without cause, and in clear violation of constitutional and statutory provisions.”

According to him, such actions undermine professionalism and weaken confidence in governance.

“These are politically motivated acts that undermine professionalism, weaken state institutions and erode public confidence in governance,” he emphasized.

Touching on the economic situation, Afenyo-Markin said that although the government touts macroeconomic progress, many citizens are yet to feel any tangible improvement.

“While recent indicators show modest macroeconomic gains, these are yet to bring real relief to the ordinary citizen,” he noted.

“The truth is stabilization means little if the youth remain unemployed and families still struggle with the cost of living.”

He lamented the plight of health and education sector workers, saying, “Over 200 junior doctors have worked for 10 months without pay and more than 800 remain unposted.

“Newly trained teachers and nurses have also gone months without salaries. A government that fails to pay its frontline workers cannot claim to care for its people.”

The Minority Leader also called out government’s inaction toward private sector empowerment, describing it as contradictory to its industrialisation agenda.

“No economy can grow when private sector initiative is replaced with political control. The time has come for government to walk the talk of ensuring that the private sector becomes the real engine of growth. Enough of the rhetoric,” he said.
