What Ghana’s chip-embedded rollout means for you

As Ghana enters a new chapter in passport modernization, many citizens are wondering: Will my current passport still work? Do I need to change it right away?
Starting Monday, April 28, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun issuing chip-embedded passports. These new documents are packed with advanced security features, meet international travel standards, and come with a streamlined application process.
What Happens to My Current Passport?
There’s no need to rush. The Ministry has confirmed that existing biometric passports will remain valid until they expire — up to 2030 — in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules. You can keep using your current passport without any issues until then.
What’s New with the Chip-Embedded Passport?
Enhanced Security: The new passports come with a built-in microchip that stores your biometric data and photo. This makes them significantly harder to counterfeit or alter.
Cultural Identity: The design incorporates powerful Adinkra symbols like Fawohodie (freedom and independence) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (democracy and cooperation), celebrating Ghana’s heritage.
Global Standards: With these upgrades, Ghana’s passports now fully comply with ICAO requirements.
How Do I Apply for the New Passport?
You don’t need to wait until your old passport expires — applications for the new version are open now.
- Online Application: Apply at www.passport.mfa.gov.gh.
- Round-the-Clock Service: Passport offices now operate 24/7 to speed up processing.
- Faster Turnaround: Regular service delivers your passport within 15 working days; expedited service takes just 5 days.
How Will I Receive My Passport?
- Home Delivery: Passports will be delivered to your doorstep at no extra cost.
- Ghana Post Pickup: If you don’t have a fixed address, you can collect your passport at your nearest post office.
- Real-Time Tracking: Track your application and delivery status online.
What Does It Cost?
In a move that has surprised many, Cabinet has proposed a fee reduction:
- New Application Fee: GH₵350 (formerly GH₵500), pending parliamentary approval.
- No Extra Fees: Delivery and tracking are free of charge.
Important Care Tips for the New Passport
Because of its electronic chip, handle your new passport with care:
- Don’t Bend: The chip is embedded in a layered polymer data page — avoid storing it in tight or curved spaces like back pockets.
- Keep It Dry: Protect it from liquids and extreme heat.
- Avoid Stacking with Cards: Don’t store bank cards or other chip-enabled items inside the passport.
For Ghanaians Living Abroad
Embassies and high commissions worldwide are equipped to process chip-embedded passport applications for citizens overseas.
Why the Change?
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa explains that the reforms stem from a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) aimed at digitizing passport services, cutting out middlemen (known locally as “goro boys”), and boosting transparency and job creation.
