Where is the principle? Egyapa Mercer slams critics over CJ suspension

Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has called out what he describes as blatant hypocrisy among critics of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), questioning their shifting stance on the removal of high-ranking officials from public office.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, Mercer drew parallels between the current suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and the previous dismissal of former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei.

He expressed concern over what he sees as selective outrage and a lack of consistency in how such matters are judged.

“You hear our friends saying, ‘Oh, after all, you did it to Charlotte Osei.’ In any event, you and I know the circumstances that led to Charlotte Osei’s removal—the infighting within their own circles at the Electoral Commission,” he stated.

Mercer questioned the moral grounds of those who had previously decried Charlotte Osei’s removal but now appear to endorse similar actions.

“Those who said her removal was wrongful—how do they justify the removal of the Chief Justice at this point? Where is the principle?” he asked.

He argued that if a process was once condemned as unfair, those who come into power should be expected to take a higher path.

“Assuming that they believed the process that Charlotte Osei was taken through was unfair, improper, and wrongful, you would expect that when they get the opportunity to govern, they wouldn’t go through the same pathway,” he said.

Mercer warned that political double standards erode public trust and questioned the future direction of Ghana’s democratic governance.

“But if they do, and your only defence is ‘Oh well, the NPP did it’—then where are we headed as a country?” he said.

“If there’s a path we want to go down as a country, then let’s go. But let’s be honest about it,” he added, emphasizing the need for consistency, principle, and honesty in political discourse and governance.
