Why Akosua Serwaa’s marriage certificate was rejected in court

The Kumasi High Court has clarified its ruling on the widowhood rights of music legend Daddy Lumba’s spouses.

Both Akosua Serwaa and Yvonne Odo Broni were confirmed as surviving spouses entitled to widowhood rites and benefits.

Counsel for Akosua Serwaa, William Kusi, explained that their application to recognize an ordinance marriage was dismissed because the submitted marriage certificate was deemed inauthentic.

“The certificate was an extract, not the original, and had missing signatures and other irregularities,” Kusi said.

The court also rejected photographic evidence presented as proof of the marriage, citing the potential for technological manipulation. However, Daddy Lumba’s own recorded statements, in which he referred to both women as his wives, were considered in the ruling.

The court urged family heads and the abusuapanyin to manage the distribution of widowhood rites amicably.

Commenting on the judgment, Kusi said: “If, after meeting with the delegation, we find it necessary to appeal, we will. At the end of the day, the truth will prevail.”
