Why NPP has decided not to contest Tamale Central by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late MP, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, after a National Steering Committee meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong explained that the decision was guided by national interest and the need to avoid further division.
“It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP,” Frimpong said. “The tension and acrimony often associated with by-elections in the country should be avoided.”
He added that the party’s greatest tribute to the late MP would be to ensure a “smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central,” rather than intensifying political rivalry.
According to the NPP, when the Electoral Commission opens nominations for the by-election, the party will, “in accord with the national interest, not take part in the contest.”
