Why Prof Alidu will be declared MP Elect for Tamale Central

The Tamale Central by-election has effectively been settled even before polls open, as all major contenders have withdrawn from the race, leaving Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu of the NDC as the sole candidate.

By virtue of this development, Prof. Alidu is expected to be declared Member of Parliament-elect for the constituency once the Electoral Commission confirms the withdrawals.

The NPP, in a a previous statement, announced it would not contest the seat, citing the tragic circumstances under which it became vacant.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, both the PNC and the LPG candidates also bowed out. The LPG candidate said, “After broad consultations and deep reflection, I have decided to withdraw my candidature from the Tamale Central by-election. This is in the best interest of our party and the democratic process.”

The PNC candidate echoed the same, stressing, “Tamale Central has long been an NDC seat. While we believe in the ideals of the PNC, we must also be realistic and focus our energies where victory is possible. For that reason, I am stepping down.”

The seat became vacant following the death of MP Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who was among eight people killed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
