Why the silence on 24-hour Economy? – Nana B questions NDC Government

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has questioned what he describes as the dwindling emphasis by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Mahama administration on the proposed 24-hour economy.

Speaking on Okay 101.7 FM, Nana B said the enthusiasm with which the NDC campaigned on the 24-hour economy concept appears to have faded since assuming office.

“Why is the NDC and the Mahama government not talking about the 24-hour economy with the same vigour as they started?” he asked.

According to him, current policy actions by the government contradict the promises made to Ghanaians during the electioneering period. He cited recent increases in electricity and water tariffs as measures that undermine the feasibility of a 24-hour economy and also the competence of the government.

“If they had told Ghanaians that when they come to power they would increase electricity and water tariffs, the people of Ghana would not have voted for them,” Nana B claimed.

Nana B accused the government of abandoning the policy narrative altogether.

“They are not even talking about the 24-hour economy,” he added.

Ghana’s long-anticipated 24-Hour Economy policy was Wednesday, July 2, 2025 launched in a bold effort to drive economic transformation, enhance productivity, and tackle unemployment through round-the-clock operations in key sectors.

The initiative—flagship among the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s manifesto promises—is designed to encourage continuous, shift-based work in industries such as manufacturing, agro-processing, healthcare, transportation, and retail.

Described by the government as a “game changer,” the policy is expected to create thousands of new jobs, increase national output, and unlock value across supply chains. Companies that enroll in the programme will benefit from tax incentives, access to stable electricity, and enhanced nighttime security.

Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, outlined the framework of the policy at the launch event, noting that it is built on three core pillars: transforming production, improving supply chains and market systems, and strengthening human capital.
