Winneba Police thwart armed robbery at rural bank

Police have reportedly foiled an armed robbery attempt at MRB Rural Bank in Winneba in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025.
Security systems at the bank went off around 1:00 AM, drawing a local patrol to the scene. Officers reportedly came under gunfire from the suspects as they tried to access the vault.
Following a brief exchange of shots, the robbers fled, leaving behind a pump-action shotgun, an empty cartridge, and tools intended for the break-in. Fortunately, no one was injured.
A team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU), led by ASP James Atampugri, was quickly dispatched from Accra to aid the investigation. Early reports indicate that five armed individuals were involved in the heist.
Police noted that the method of the attempted robbery bears striking resemblance to past rural bank attacks, suggesting that the same gang may be involved.
