Withdraw the bill – Mahama directs Majority leadership on OSP repeal move

President John Dramani Mahama has formally asked the Majority Leader and Majority Chief Whip in Parliament to pull back a Private Member’s Bill aimed at repealing the law that established the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Presidency said the directive aligns with Mahama’s commitment to strengthening anti-corruption institutions rather than weakening them.

According to the statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mahama considers the OSP an essential pillar in Ghana’s anti-corruption framework.

“The President’s request follows his public expression of support for the strengthening of the Office of Special Prosecutor as a vital cog in the fight against corruption,” the statement noted.

Mahama reiterated that the OSP must demonstrate stronger visibility and impact in its mandate.
He “also reiterates his call on The Office of The Special Prosecutor to do more to boost public confidence in its work and frontally tackle corruption in line with the objectives informing the establishment of the office.”

The President communicated his position after meeting with the National Peace Council, where he emphasized the importance of sustaining the country’s anti-corruption architecture.
