Without office, they’ll still be Directors” — Mahama orders immediate promotions for GES Deputies

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education across the country, even without physical office space.

The directive, announced by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during a public event on Thursday, April 24, responds to long-standing complaints from education professionals and the growing pressure from teacher unions.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) recently threatened to go on strike by April 30, citing the government’s failure to address delayed promotions and systemic stagnation affecting lower-ranked educators.

“One of your major concerns, the president raised to me, is that in his campaign rounds, many of you who are deputy directors of education struggle to move the ladder above you to become directors because of the unavailability of office spaces,” Haruna Iddrisu said at the event.

But rather than allowing infrastructure bottlenecks to hinder career progression, Mahama’s directive cuts through the red tape.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to give all those deputy directors a legitimate promotion. And even without office, they will still serve in their capacities as directors of GES,” the Minister declared.

The announcement was made during the launch of a sanitary pad distribution campaign aimed at improving menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls — a setting that underscored the government’s broader focus on educational wellbeing and equity.
