You don’t need the voters or your party, just peave Ghana a legacy

Respected Ghanaian economist and statesman, Kwame Pianim, has stirred a fresh wave of political reflection following his bold and heartfelt message to President John Dramani Mahama during a courtesy call by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
Speaking candidly, Pianim urged Mahama to rise above partisan pressures and seize what he called a “historic opportunity” to reset the nation’s path.
According to Pianim, the presidency offers Mahama a unique position — not just of power, but of purpose.
“Somebody told them he was going to give them 10,000 houses — they got zero,” Pianim said bluntly, referring to a failed promise made to teachers.
In contrast, he praised Mahama’s openness and capacity to listen, adding,
“I told them this is a listening president.”
Pianim then placed an even heavier charge on Mahama’s shoulders:
“Of the 35, 36 million Ghanaians alive, you are the only one who can reset Ghana for us,” he said.
Clearly passionate, Pianim revealed he had also spoken to politicians across the divide, encouraging them to support Mahama in the national interest, not just for political gain.
“I’ve been talking to the other people on the other side when I put on my political hat — that all of us have to make sure democracy works and support you.”
His final message was emphatic and loaded:
“If you fail us, this is a historic opportunity gone. You are the right person. You don’t need the voters, you don’t need your party. Do the best for Ghana and leave a legacy for us.”
