Man killed by electric shock near ECG transformer in Twifo Praso

A man believed to be in his 50s, identified as Mr. Samuel Kwame Afezei, tragically lost his life on Monday, May 12, 2025, after being electrocuted while working on the third floor of a building located dangerously close to a high-tension power line and an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer.
The incident occurred in Twifo Praso Zongo, within the Twifo Atti Morkwa District of the Central Region. Mr. Afezei was reportedly engaged in construction work when he accidentally came into contact with high-voltage electrical equipment.
Residents of the area, visibly distressed by the tragedy, expressed anger over what they described as longstanding negligence by authorities. They revealed that they had repeatedly raised safety concerns about the building’s proximity to electrical infrastructure, but their warnings were ignored.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Richmond Banny, the Assembly Member for the Zongo-Anogyan Electoral Area, confirmed that he had earlier petitioned the ECG and the district engineer over the potential dangers at the site.
“I warned them several times. The location of the building near high-voltage wires was a serious risk. But nothing was done,” Mr. Banny lamented.
He further alleged that political interference played a role in the inaction, claiming the building’s owner had ties to the ruling party, which may have influenced the authorities’ decision to overlook the warnings.
Following the incident, fear has gripped tenants currently occupying the first and second floors of the building, with many calling for immediate government intervention.
Mr. Banny has since called on the Twifo Atti Morkwa District Chief Executive to step in and implement urgent safety measures, including reviewing construction approvals near power installations to prevent future tragedies.
The body of the deceased has been conveyed to the morgue, and an investigation is expected to be launched.
