You’ll shoot yourself in the foot

A private legal practitioner has cautioned Professor Ransford Gyampo against pursuing his threatened lawsuit against Dr. George Domfeh.

The lawyer, speaking on Afia Pokua’s Gyaso Gyaso show on Okay FM and monitored by MyNewsGh, argued that going to court could become a costly mistake for Professor Gyampo, given the sensitive history surrounding his name.

“If Prof goes to court, he might end up shooting himself in the foot,” the lawyer said plainly, adding that Dr. Domfeh and his supporters “may decide to open up past issues, and that could embolden alleged victims to come forward and testify.”

His warning comes at a time when tensions between the two academics have escalated sharply following their heated clash on TV3’s Keypoints programme.

As part of the fallout, Professor Gyampo has already initiated formal action through his lawyers, demanding an immediate retraction and apology from Dr. Domfeh over what he considers a damaging and defamatory allegation.

In a letter dated November 16, 2025, issued by the law firm Darko, Keli-Delataa & Company, Dr. Domfeh was instructed to retract his statement within 24 hours and issue a public apology on the same platform where the comment was made.

According to the solicitors, what began as policy and intellectual disagreements quickly became, in their words, “ascerbic, insulting and downright defamatory.”

The letter further argues that Dr. Domfeh’s remark was “widely understood by many right-thinking members of the viewing public to mean that our client is a paedophile,” a characterisation the lawyers described as “reckless, patently false, and malicious.”

They emphasised that the allegation severely damages the public image of Professor Gyampo, whom they described as “a respected academic and a national thought leader,” especially considering the prominence of the platform on which the statement was made.

For the apology to be considered satisfactory, the lawyers insisted it must be delivered on “a similar prominent platform hosted by the media organisation on whose network you made the impugned statement.”

But the lawyer on Gyaso Gyaso believes the matter should never have reached this level.

“The lawyers made a mistake instigating a lawsuit in a situation that could have been settled amicably,” he said, suggesting that both sides missed the opportunity to de-escalate.

He drew parallels with the recent dispute involving the family of highlife legend Daddy Lumba, noting that “that whole case could have been avoided if the lawyers for the two widows had simply met and ironed out their differences one-on-one.”
