Zapp Mallet is Ghana’s version of Quincy Jones – Rex Omar

Veteran Ghanaian musician and politician Rex Omar has called for greater recognition of legendary music producer Zapp Mallet, describing him as Ghana’s own version of Quincy Jones.
In a heartfelt reaction to a tribute video highlighting some of Zapp’s most impactful works, Rex Omar praised the celebrated producer’s immense contribution to the Ghanaian music industry.
“Zapp is like the Quincy Jones’s in the US. What makes him exceptional is that, 1. Zapp is an accomplished musician 2. A great singer 3.
A multi-instrumentalist, a Composer, a Producer and a Performer who worked passionately just for the love of the game. Zapp needs to be honored and I pray he lives longer for some of us to ensure that,” Rex Omar stated.
The video, which has been widely circulated online, features snippets of major hit songs Zapp Mallet has produced over the years.
Many fans expressed surprise at the range of his influence, with several hits across genres carrying his signature touch.
The renewed conversation around Zapp Mallet’s legacy follows a recent interview by former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, on Asempa FM.
In the interview, Okraku Mantey revealed that many iconic songs in Ghana’s music history were produced by Zapp—though his role often goes unrecognized by the public.
