Court jails 36-year-old to life imprisonment and 120 years for killing Kumasi pharmacist

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced 36-year-old Dominic Afriyie, also known as “GH,” to life imprisonment for murder and 120 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for two counts of robbery.

The sentence was handed down by His Honour Mr. Abdul Razak, ESQ, after a full trial in which a seven-member jury unanimously found Afriyie guilty.

The crimes date back to November 20, 2021, when Afriyie attacked the Atasemanso residence of the late Michael Dela Agbo Klu, a 43-year-old pharmacist and building contractor.

Armed with a gun, Afriyie robbed the family of two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH¢1,500 in cash. During the robbery, he shot and killed Mr. Klu.

Following the incident, police received intelligence about a planned robbery in the Atasemanso area. A surveillance operation was launched on December 30, 2021, leading to the arrest of Afriyie and three others in the early hours of December 31.

They were intercepted in a Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 5970-20. A search of the vehicle revealed two pistols and two single-barrelled shotguns.

Subsequent investigations confirmed that Afriyie had acted alone in the November robbery and murder.

He was charged and arraigned before the High Court in Kumasi, where he pleaded not guilty. However, the jury returned a guilty verdict, leading to the sentencing.

The ruling marks the end of a case that gripped the Kumasi community and brings some measure of justice to the family of the late Michael Dela Agbo Klu.
